From subtle copper pipe gas leakage to clogged cooling coils and dual-run capacitor failures, learn what causes sudden AC cooling loss and when to call certified HVAC engineers.
The Frustration of a Warm Air AC in Extreme Heat
When outdoor temperatures exceed 40°C, your air conditioner works under immense head pressure. If your indoor blower unit is running normally but blowing room-temperature or warm air, one of the following critical technical faults has occurred.
1. Refrigerant Gas Leakage (R32 / R410A)
Air conditioners do not consume gas like a vehicle consumes fuel. If gas levels drop, there is a physical micro-puncture in the copper flare nuts, evaporator coil bends, or service valves.
- Symptom: Thin ice forming on the discharge copper pipe or hiss sounds from the outdoor unit.
- Solution: A certified HVAC technician must conduct an electronic nitrogen pressure test, braze the leak with silver rod, and perform 100% vacuum before refilling pure virgin gas.
2. Failed Compressor Dual-Run Capacitor
The outdoor unit contains a high-microfarad capacitor (usually 35µF to 55µF) that provides torque to kick-start the compressor motor. Voltage fluctuations often cause this capacitor to bulge and blow out, leaving only the fan running while the compressor stays dead.
3. Clogged Outdoor Condenser Coil Fins
If atmospheric dust coats the outdoor heat exchanger fins, heat cannot disperse into the air. The compressor reaches its internal thermal cutoff temperature (105°C) and automatically trips to prevent permanent motor burnout.
